Miami-based artificial intelligence company Premonition Analytics has named Fargo’s Gary A. Ficek as the busiest attorney in North Dakota by number of cases. According to data drawn from Premonition’s court database, Ficek, a solo practitioner who specializes in Social Security Disability claims, was involved in several thousand proceedings over the past two years. Ficek Law Office heads up a list otherwise dominated by collections-based firms like Rodenburg Law, Messerli & Kramer and Rausch Sturm Israel Enerson & Hornik:

There are roughly 15 million cases filed in the United States each year. Using North Dakota as a microcosm, represented by the 15 firms listed in Premonition’s survey, it becomes clear that the years-long class action suits that grab headlines obscure the fact a vast majority of the cases that pass before America’s judges are decided in relatively short order: the average case duration for the busiest firms is less than 20 days, with only four firms averaging more than a month per case. Of course, ‘busy-ness’ is relative: judging by the number of days actually spent in court, Mackoff Kellogg for example, would jump into the top 5. The oldest firm in the state, Mackoff Kellogg’s more diverse portfolio, which includes oil, mineral and gas litigation, lends itself naturally to longer proceedings.

These basic statistics regarding number and duration of cases only reveal so much about a given firm (or the legal system as a whole). But Premonition also claims to be able to measure win rates for attorneys and firms, including in front of specific judges, potentially allowing clients unprecedented insight into their performance. Premonition’s proprietary database, which normalizes case records from over 3,000 courts in the United States alone, is perhaps the world’s largest, and the company’s artificial intelligence tool provides highly customized search capability, able to ‘read’ and analyze over 50,000 records per second according to the company’s website.
