BLAZING TRAILS – Premonition’s objective is to use Al to read large numbers of cases to determine what constitutes a win, including pretrial outcomes. “There is not enough aggregated court data in one place; Al allows us to do it en masse. The tool is built mainly on machine learning with some AI, but it’s fully automated. It has been pulling more than a million cases a day and putting it into our data framework.” General counsel, insurance companies and some law firms all use the system. “We are getting a lot more interest in business development for law firms. We pull an ‘open case report, the system analyzes it and puts a traffic light on every case. Good pairings are green, and yellow would be a reasonable outcome. But the opportunity is in the red boxes: We can see that a particular attorney hasn’t had good results in this type of litigation in that particular jurisdiction. It allows for an analytical pitch.” Insurance represents the biggest market. “It’s a risk tool and a great tool for managing claims. Basically, we are bringing transparency”

FUTURE EXPLORATIONS – Clients will push law firms into using technology. Transparency will also end many frivolous lawsuits. “Bringing this information to law departments will cause them to fight cases differently.” The efficiencies of smaller cases will be handled by technology systems. “In the longer run, there will be far fewer than the 1.2 million attorneys we have now. But the value of the lawyers that remain will be much higher.”
